We are long-time users of Lake Powhatan. It is a close drive to our home in Flat Rock, NC, and meets our needs for a great camping facility. We especially appreciate the single-stall restroom and separate shower. They are well taken care of by staff and on our last chilly stay, the heaters were welcome. Since we live in WNC, where lots of folks want to visit, we consider our camping options close to home well worth not having to travel long distances. It's right here and already the best!

The facility is remarkably well-maintained and has large and beautiful campsites. Personnel were respectful and helpful. This was a perfect experience. Firewood at $10 a bundle was the only disappointment and I hope that is readdressed soon.

My new go-to park when visiting Asheville
I travelled here with a 35’ 5th wheel, long bed pickup and parked in site #38 Lakeside Loop, a FHU, BI site for $28/night with the America the Beautiful Senior pass (50% off the site fee but utilities were charged separately.) The roads and sites were asphalt and navigating was okay. The road was a little narrow so going around curves was a bit tight. This site was just off a curve in the road which made it harder to get into plus being an uphill push. It took me 2-3 tries to get the approach right. It was a lovely site once in there. It was plenty long for the rig and truck as well as being spacious. Nice trees for shade and there wasn’t another site really close by. It was a quiet campground even though it was spring break. There are lots of trails nearby for both hiking and biking. I didn’t have much connectivity at the site – texts would come in randomly and sometimes emails would show up but I couldn’t open them. There was a handful of OTA channels and no wifi. The bathhouse was clean with individual shower rooms and toilets (2 each.) The staff and rangers were very helpful when I had an issue with my front jacks. There is a great grocery store 10-15 minutes away and an outlet mall nearby. This will be my go-to park to stay at when visiting Asheville. I would probably choose site 36 or 37 on the Lakeside Loop or 21 on the Big John Loop.

Nice campground in close proximity to Asheville. 1 night at a site with hookups, 2nd night a dry site. Both were good. Bathrooms/showers were very modern and clean. Nice pond with swimming beach and fishing pier. No cell service with our T-Moble phones.
We heard it is possible to hike to the NC Arboretum from the campground, although we didn't do the hike. We drove to the Arboretum on our way out of town. Cost was $30, but worth it. Beautiful grounds, gardens, and visitor center. Current art exhibit of Andrea Rich's woodcuts is great. Don't miss it.

Nice hiking trails, they do not have "paper" maps so I would suggest printing some before you come. (I hate reading a map on my tiny phone screen). It is close enough to Ashville for some day trips in. The campsite was pretty quiet even though it was pretty full. It he Hard times section the sites are spread out enough that you are not crammed on top of each other.
