Very nice campground, short walk to the ocean, plenty of space between campsites, a mother bear and her 2 cubs crossed the road in front of us at the Alligator River Refuge….just a great time

Clean restrooms, great location, loved the Marina, restaurant, dump station and gas across the street.
The beach was just over the dunes.

We enjoyed this campground. It is just a short walk over the dunes to the beautiful beach. It is very clean and we Will definitely stay again if we are in the area. If you camper is bigger than 39 feet most sites would not work.

Campsites are small. The area next to the paved parking is not very level so it was hard to set up the site. Worst of all, the grass near the site was full of goatheads, small sharp burrs that the dog picked up on her paws and fur. We had to remove all of those and keep her off the ground unless we carried her to the road. We also had to take our shoes off every time we went in the camper so as not to carry them inside.
The bathhouse was clean enough. The dump station is up the road near the bridge. It looks like a two side access but one dump hole is cemented over so its really on a single.

We had an excellent week of cool weather camping at Oregon Inlet the 2nd week of November. The on-line reservation process and check-in upon arrival went without a hitch. We had Electric and Water at our site, so we were very comfortable in the 5th wheel camper. (We did use the heat a couple of the nights.)
We had one afternoon warm enough to sit on the beach. I really enjoyed hiking over the tall dunes to get to the beach; good exercise and a very pretty walk. (You do need to wear some kind of shoes though; there are quite a few sand burrs that are tough on the feet if you step on one.)
We enjoyed several day trips while camping at Oregon Inlet.
One morning we went to the fishing pier on the opposite side of the bridge. (A section of the previous Bonner Bridge repurposed as a fishing pier.)
We also hiked around the Bodie Island Lighthouse, including walking trails at the back of the grounds.
We spent half a day driving south further down the outer banks, with stops at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton, currently being refurbished, and then down to Frisco.
We spent one afternoon hiking at Jockeys Ridge State park, both on the dunes the some trails back by the sound. The visitors center was also quite nice.
We spent a day driving to the Alligator River Nature Preserve on the other side of Roanoke Island, and hiking a few of the trails over there. We actually saw a bear, but at quite a distance.
My wife and I both vacationed on the Outer Banks as kids (camping), and again several times with our own kids (in nice vacation rental homes). It was very nice to get back there as a retired couple, camping at the same park we first camped at on Cape Hatteras when we were kids ourselves.
If you don't need a plush private campground to enjoy camping, Oregon Inlet National Park Campground may be a good choice to check out.

The Oregon Inlet Campground is close to friends that I enjoy fishing with. I chose the electric and water available sites. The site was fairly level. Except for the 30 mile an hour winds blowing the camper the campground was quiet.

Loved the location right on the beach. Tried to retake a shower but they are outside with half doors and no temperature control and you have to pull on a circular ring on a chain to get water and keep it down somehow while showering. Old!!!! I did not attempt this in November, just sayin’!

I had a site reserved at Frisco Campground, but Hurricane Erin left the roads covered with water and sand. Luckily, I was able to get a site at Oregon Inlet.
The ranger at check-in was very helpful in finding a good site for me. The ocean is a just short hike over the dunes, which was quite the challenge for me, as I am over 70 years old. A dune walkover access ramp would be very nice for older folks. The shower was warm, but breezy. The restrooms were clean. My site was adequate, but next time, I’ll choose one in the tent area. The RV lights and generators were annoying.
Unfortunately, the Bodie Lighthouse and the Visitor Center were closed. But I still very much enjoyed camping and exploring near the ocean!
All in all a very good place to camp.
