What Guests Are Saying
Dead Swede campground is highly praised for its cleanliness, well-maintained facilities, and attentive camp hosts, making it one of the best camping experiences for many visitors. The beautiful location by the South Tongue River and opportunities for wildlife viewing, including moose and deer, enhance its appeal. However, some guests noted issues with site privacy and noise from nearby ATV traffic, which may detract from the experience for some campers.

Beautiful, quiet, & nicely spaced campsites set among tall pines, rock outcroppings, & the Tongue River. The campsites amenities were perfect, fire ring, barbecue, & extra large table. The vault toilets were exceptionally clean & well dispersed through the camp. Be prepared for no cell reception. The elevation is at least 8 thousand feet, so be ready for the winding steep drive up the mountain, breath-taking views await at every turn. The final leg to the campsite is a manageable gravel/dusty road. The Tongue River Canyon hike is a must, the most stunning vistas, start very early in the summer months, it gets hot, & the hike is strenuous at times, but absolutely rewarding. Big Horn National Forest is stunning!

Loved this camp site. Close to Bear Lodge for dining, close to hiking trails and lakes. Campground was quite and restroom amenities clean.

Great spot up in the Big Horns. If you’re looking for peace & quiet along with some mountain scenery, this campground could be for you. It’s got no electric, water, or sewer & it’s a few miles off the highway, which seems to help in keeping the noise down. Be sure to fill up your fresh water tank at the Burgess Junction dump station before you head to the campground.

Our GPS took us to National Forest Road 231 and we ended up tearing our camper up. The jacks were ripped off and we lost our fresh water tank.

Beautiful campground! We’ve been coming to the Big Horns for three years and always try to get a camping spot at the Dead Swede. Clean facility, stream for fishing and perfect amount of space between campsites for privacy.
