I have been camping at Shady Rest Campground since 1956, and have nothing but fond memories of this lovely spot. Yes, it's changed over the decades, but some things one can count on: shady trees! Old Shady Rest will remain my choice; New Shady Rest is a bit too crowded for me.
We stayed for 5 nights in space 5 in our 24' RV and loved it. The neighbors and camp host were very friendly; the bathrooms clean; the campground decently quiet. During the day, the sound of chain saws at New Shady Rest as crews thin the trees might have been annoying, but we left for adventures every day, and the crew promptly stopped work at 4:30.
The location of both Shady Rest Campgrounds is ideal for those who want to get around easily, and the beautiful Shady Rest Park is a tiny bike ride or walk.

Site 36 stated it was 25 feet, but more like 20. The boulders placed in the back of the site shortened it. Our trailer would not fit.
We had to find another site which was nearly impossible to park our 22 foot trailer into because of the curve of the road and close proximity to trees. We then had to move to another site as it was reserved part way into our stay. The camp hosts were very helpful.

It was nice to be so close to the stores, etc. We are relatively new campers, so if we forgot things we could easily pick them up at the store across the street. There was some noise from concerts in town, but not so loud that we couldn't sleep.

Nice campground. We had our motorhome in site 46. it was terribly unlevel. I never can understand why National Forest Service campsites can't be made more level. It shouldn't be that difficult.

Our camping trip was great. The camp site is well manicured and clean. Having flush toilets is a plus. The Hosts were helpful and accommodating to our inquiries. Camping in mid September turned out to our advantage as there were no pasty mosquitoes or flies. The location of Old Shady Rest is very accessible to the accommodations of Mammoth Lakes town.
