What Guests Are Saying
Sunset Campground is praised for its beautiful sunset views, clean facilities, and convenient location near major attractions in Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Many visitors enjoyed the serene atmosphere, ample hiking opportunities, and friendly staff. However, some noted issues with noise from neighboring sites and varying site sizes, which could impact the camping experience. Overall, it's a lovely spot that many would return to despite a few drawbacks.

Beautiful campground. First time staying there. Sites are pretty small and too close to one another. Happy that the bathrooms were cleaned daily.

We stayed 2 nights in Sunset campground in July. The location is obviously great--close to the Grant Grove of sequoias as well as the Grant Grove market, John Muir lodge and King's Canyon visitor center. Our campsite was at the back end of the campground and backed up to open space which was nice.
On the other hand, there were a few problems that made our stay less than ideal.
The first was bugs. Lots of flies and mosquitoes. Especially the flies. Constantly in our faces. Buzzing around our ears. Constantly. My best guess is all the food waste in dumpsters scattered around the campground are fly factories. Not sure what can be done about that but the flies made our stay much less enjoyable.
The second was trash. Our site had a lot of little bits of plastic from chip bags and the plastic that the little straws on juice boxes are wrapped in. And little bits of paper. All over the campsite. I spent at least 45 minutes picking up little bits of trash from previous campers--not my first choice of activities when camping in a national park.
The third was the group in a campsite about 3 sites over from us on our second night. Probably at least 150 feet away. They were up until 1:30 talking loudly, laughing and playing music. We could easily hear what they were saying, and their frequent outbursts of yelling and laughing woke us up a number of times. Quiet hours in a campground are only as good as the enforcement, and in this campground, there was none.
Overall, the campground is nice, but the above issues definitely made our stay less enjoyable and made us not want to spend any time at our campsite except when necessary to prepare food and to sleep.

The flying bugs and ants were at full force in early July. If you have food out they will find you and destroy you. Keep a fire going and the flying ones won't bother you. But the ants will crawl everywhere. The campsite has just enough amenities for you not to hate yourself. Water spigots not too far for water ,a fire pit and a place to dump ash, bathrooms. Would come back again.
