Stillwater (Colorado)

The campground was a good base for us, being close to Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park. It was very sad to see the lake so low; though we understand the water situation is very bad in most southwestern states.

Clean bathrooms, accessible water, roomy sites. However, there is no shade and it can be very windy.

This campground has a lot of sites and they are all very close to each other. Your neighbors will be right next to you. The area is very hot and windy. All the info says there is no shade, which is correct. We brought our shade tent for the picnic area and even though it was strapped down and staked, it blew over in the wind and was destroyed.

Site. C110 was level and fit our 26’ travel trailer nicely. It had a terrific lake view. Short walk with the dogs down to the lake. No electric, water, or sewer. That was not a problem. We stayed 5 nights and used the dump station on the way out. Grand Lake is a short drive up the road. Great Main Street with many restaurants, shops and bars.
I think Stillwater is the best campground in the area.

We had a wonderful time. Despite the water levels being low, it was not as far of a walk as I anticipated to the water. My kids caught 6 fish between them over the 3 days from the shore, and our dog loved the extra "beach"/lakeshore to run on. The camp host was WONDERFUL. She saw me struggling to back in my trailer as it was the first time out since Labor Day and only my second season with it, and she went and found someone to help me who was a complete expert and so kind! Everyone was so nice and wonderful, and had that not happened, who knows how frustrated I may have become. We have always stayed at Arapaho Bay, but with the low water levels, we tried Stillwater and it was much quieter than I expected and still felt somewhat remote despite being close to the highway/towns. We will definitely be coming back.

Aside from the reservoir being extremely low, the only issue preventing you from getting on the water and enjoying yourself were the wind gusts and white caps. The sites are somewhat close together (and some are small) but it doesn't feel like you're intruding on your neighbor. The restrooms were mostly clean; however, some of the bath houses did not have hand soap. The camp hosts in Loop B were very friendly and funny. They were always driving around and greeting guests.

The campground has a beautiful location. Walking down to the water was a highlight. If you're going solo, the campsites are pretty nice, but if you're going with others, they are further apart than we anticipated. Also, the showers were not operational when we visited and the bathrooms weren't super clean. Finally, there was no one at the "office" entrance. When we found a camp host, they said no one manages that, so you're kind of out of luck if you have any questions.

Campsite was clean, including the fire pit, on arrival. The restroom on the hill was also very clean and well stocked. The camp hosts were visible but not intrusive, and very friendly.
