Well laid out, clean rest rooms and nice flat pads.
The anti-bear food lockers at each site were very welcome given the proliferation or bears that n the valley.

The campground is well maintained. There are on site bathroom facilities including toilet stalls, sinks, and soap dispensers. There are also a few qater stations which are convenient so that we did not have to bring in our own water for drinking and cooking. Piñon pine trees around the campground provide a bit of privacy in the sense that they block direct line of sight to campsites that are not immediately nearby. The views of the mountains and the dunes are lovely, and I enjoyed listening to birds in the early hours of morning since I woke up much earlier than most people camping near us. There is also a trail from the campground to the dunes.

Very enjoyable visit. The camp site has terrific views and is close to water and toilets.
The camp host Nancy does a great job, helped us settle in and explained the park guide lines.

Site 39 was large enough for our trailer and we had a great view of the Dunes. Sadly, no Medano river water by the Dunes and the wind was pretty severe. We had to cancel our last night. Would highly recommend this campground but many sites are short and more suited to tents.

May was a lovely time to be at the dunes! There is a camp store between loop 1 and 2 that was a useful supply of extra firewood and ice for us. We rented sand boards outside the park and had a blast riding the dunes off the 4-wheel drive road at the Sand Pit. There was a little water in the creek there, but not too much.

We stayed for 2 nights in mid May. Our site, #79 was big enough to fit our 17' trailer and our 4Runner. Campground was full both nights. A different group of campers than we normally see, mostly tents and small trailers. Not enough room for big rigs here.
Sadly, due to the lack of winter & spring snow the creek, which is a big attraction especially in late May early June, was a no show. It was very windy, as I gather it often is (that's why the dunes are here!). Fortunately our site was somewhat sheltered from it. Since we were only here two nights we couldn't do a lot, though there are a number of good options-hiking or sliding in the dunes, mountain trails, driving the Medano Pass Road, Zapata Falls, Ranger programs and more.
We walked to the dunes at sunset the first evening and hiked to the Dunes Overlook the second day.

From Highway 160, turn north on Highway 150 and follow for 16 mi to the entrance of Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. Continue 5 mi north on the park's main road to reach the campground entrance.
From Highway 285, turn south onto CO-17 and follow for 36 mi (36 mi). Turn east onto Lane 6 and follow for 16 mi (16.2 mi) to Highway 150. Turn north onto Highway 150 and follow for 2.6 mi (2.5 mi) to the entrance of Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. Continue 5 mi (5 mi) north on the park's main road to reach the campground entrance.
Highway access
Pinon Flats Campground is accessible via Highway 160, which is approximately 16 miles away, and Highway 285, which is about 36 miles away. Highway 150 provides direct access to the campground from both highways.
Policies & Rules
General
- You must have a reservation to camp at Piñon Flats Campground. First-come, first-serve camping is not available.
- Choose your site carefully. If you arrive in camping equipment that is larger than the site, there will not be an alternative site available and you will have to find accommodation outside the park.All tents and gear must fit within established tent pads and/or within rock wall.
- Maximum of 8 people, 2 tents, 2 vehicles per site. Not all sites fit 2 tents or 2 vehicles, a trailer counts as a vehicle. Please see each individual site details, warnings and need to know for specifications.There must be at least one adult (18+) staying in each site.
- There is no waiting list for campsites and staff cannot hold available sites at the campground.
- Total combined length limit is 35 feet. RVs over 35 feet, or combined vehicle plus trailer length over 35 feet, are not allowed in the campground. Trailers, RVs, and Vehicles cannot block the road and must be parked on pavement.
- Generator use is permitted only between the hours of , and .
- Nothing can be attached to any trees or vegetation, to include hammocks, ropes, garbage bags, etc.
- No showers, hookups or laundry facilities available in the park.
- Never leave fires unattended! Extinguish fire with water, not dirt. Firewood gathering is prohibited; wood may be purchased at the camp store.
- Utilize bear boxes at all times and keep campsite clean. No food, garbage, or cooking equipment may be left unattended. Picnic tables cannot be moved from one site to another.
- Scooters, skateboards, and inline skates are not permitted in the campground. Drones are not permitted anywhere within park boundaries. Fireworks are prohibited.
- Pets must be on leash at all times and not left unattended. Pick up after pets, dispose of waste properly.
- Group sites are tent-only; no RVs or trailers allowed.
- An entrance pass is required while in the park and is not included in the camping fee.
- For emergencies, dial 911 from your cell phone.
