What Guests Are Saying

Amphitheater Campground is highly praised for its stunning views, cleanliness, and friendly, helpful camp hosts who enhance the overall experience. While the campground features tight roads and small sites, making it less suitable for larger RVs, it is ideal for tents and smaller trailers. Some guests noted the need for bear boxes and improvements to the pit toilets, but many expressed their eagerness to return due to the beautiful setting and access to hiking trails.

We haven’t camped there in years and it was still the beautiful place we remembered.
The camp ground hosts were the best! Very helpful! David and Nancy were always helping , cleaning and being welcoming!

Campsite was great, views were amazing and like no other (depends on which site # you were at) and the hosts were so nice! The host (Steve) was extremely knowledgeable about the area, the different hikes and off roading trails and gave great recommendations on things to do and see. Overall, campsite was well kept, in an excellent location, and an amazing view. Can’t wait to come back!

The views are amazing, the hosts are excellent. We have been coming here for over 20 years and it needs to have a few upgrades. We are considering not returning because the past few years the toilets have been horrible. Flies, fans not working etc. They are from the 70s. They are the worst toilets that we have experienced in all of our camping. They desperately need to be totally overhauled. It is a real shame because the views are amazing . The location is the best, we would live to come back but it needs tlc with all the use it gets.

Campground host was extremely helpful. Directed me to my campsite (which was kind of hard to find as directions on the sign were confusing). Views from the campsite were spectacular.

Wow! This is a stunning campground overlooking Ouray but also looking up at the San Juan range which is a jagged beauty that wraps right round you. The site was great. Vault toilets' needed sucking but that happens when the site is busy. We found a different block of toilets had less volume. The hosts tried to keep them clean as best they could while waiting on a full 'removal'. We walked/ran the Perimeter Trail which is about 8miles/12km and can be accessed from the bottom of the campsite (up Baby Bathtub Track). This was a wonderful way to explore the area. Afterwards we enjoyed the hot springs (and a hot shower) and then hit the town. What a wonderful spot! Ouray is such a special town.

Besides being one of the more beautiful campgrounds I've stayed it (we had an incredible view at campsite #11), the staff was also extremely friendly. It was simple as pie booking on reservation.gov so that all we had to do was say hello to the campsite host.
