Lake Powhatan delivers beauty in the surroundings, the facilities are super clean and the staff are the nicest I have ever interacted with at any Recreation.gov facility. It is close to several attractions, mtn. biking is amazing and hiking directly from your camp spot. Love this place.

Our favorite campsite in the Asheville area and one of our favorites overall. Sites are spacious and have a nice amount of privacy from other campsites. Bathrooms are always clean. The lake area is a fun walking loop.

My gf and I had a great time at Lake Powhatan campground. We were at 097 as part of the Hard Times loop. You're kinda deep in the Pisgah National Forest so it's pretty quiet/serene. Camp counselor dude Stewart (I think that was his name - met us at the entrance) was cool af and gave us some helpful bear hints. He said there had been no sightings of bear that week but that the previous week there were several. I could've SWORN I heard a big black bear rummaging through the woods all night about 20 yards from our tent! Not sure what else it could've been but as long as you keep your site free of food there should be no problems.
Overall, a pretty simple tent-only campsite for us with lots of space - hefty wooden table, fire ring, and a large bear-proof container in which to store things. Only negative was the gravel/rock tent base. I prefer grass for my tent stakes, but other than that, a fantastic spot in the woods for tent camping!

Campsites are spacious. Bathroom and showers clean and spacious as well. Provided sink to wash dishes with hot water. If needed they had a landry room all convenient located.
Hiking trails were nice.

The camp hosts and everyone working there was wonderful and helpful when we had an unfortunate travel experience due to our truck breaking down on the first morning of our trip. They helped us find another campsite when we had to extend our trip multiple days, and allowed us to have groceries delivered when we were running out of food and didn’t have a vehicle to go shopping, they helped turn a difficult situation better and we are grateful. Campground was picturesque in the fall, and accidentally hiking to the arboretum was a special treat.

Big wooded private sites! Bathrooms were exceptionally clean & pretty good water pressure! Staff of workers were really great! 20 min or so from Asheville! Can't wait to go back!

This was our first time at Lake Powhatan, and we were very dissappointed at the size of the lake (we were expecting a lake, not a pond). That being said, everything else about it was great. It was very convenient location to get to the NC Arboretum and Blue Ridge Parkway. We were at site 31 for 2 days, and then moved to site 31. Both were good sized and pretty level. 31 did not have power, and the loop was therefore a lot less crowded. 21 in Big John Loop had more campers, but was still quiet and private feeling. The bathrooms/showers were centrally located in the middle of the loops, and were easy to access.

My favorite site. Greenway in rear of site has large opening in forest. Allows me to receive 2 or 3 different over the air HDTV channels and at least one bar of Verizon service.
