It was quiet and serene and still beautiful. Weather was not too cold (fortunately) and the hiking was wonderful. Plenty to do nearby if the weather does get bad. A great place to stay.

The weather was miserable with heavy rain 10 of 14 days. Of course that was nothing you could control but the part you could have controlled, mud and nonexistent drainage from the tent pad made this by far the worst trip I have ever taken to a National Park. This is not the first time I have complained about the lack of gravel and poor drainage from the tent pads. One night I even found my flip flops floating outside my tent, the fire pit overflowing with water and burned wood pieces floating across the pad.
Additionally, the showers on Big John Loop have virtually no water pressure. I carry a plastic tea container to the shower to collect the dribbling water to dump on my head. This is another complaint I have made many times previously, obviously to uncaring caretakers. Finally, who would have thought that the showers on Lakeside Loop, a full service loop for large RVs and campers, would have great water pressure.

Friendly staff, clean and spacious campsites. Lots of outdoors activities such as biking, hiking, small lake for swimming.

We camped in site 53 for one last trip of 2022. We enjoyed hiking close by on trails above the lake and to the NC Arboretum. Also did some Christmas shopping in Asheville. The Moose Cafe and Rockys Hot Chicken Shack both had great food! We have already booked another trip on the one buddy site in June 2023 and plan to bring our e-bikes to ride the forest service roads.

Fantastic park...one of the best in the US! Huge, secluded spots with easy access to the lake and a myriad of great trails. Facility is impeccably clean and the camp hosts are incredible. Even as a full-time RVer, this is a favorite spot and we stay as long as we can when we are in the area. Cell coverage is spotty, but works, but not enough bandwidth for wifi.
