What Guests Are Saying
Smokemont Campground offers a clean and tranquil setting with ample space, a nearby stream, and access to numerous hiking trails. Many visitors appreciate the wildlife, including elk sightings, and the helpful staff. While some amenities like showers are lacking, the overall experience is positive, with a focus on nature and a peaceful atmosphere. However, campsite proximity and occasional noise from fellow campers can be drawbacks.

Pros: Great location and very nice camp site. They also had a ranger-led riverside education activity when we were there and the kids loved it. Kudos to NPS for doing these things.
The major con is the bathroom situation. They are not kept up well. They never seem to have hand soap. There was a sign at the front office saying it will be staffed intermittently as per the staffing allows. This indicates personnel shortage, which could explain the bathroom conditions.

Campground sites didn't seem to be as well taken care of as they have been in the past, bath rooms either.

We had a great camping trip, The site was perfect it had alot of shade, it was quiet, the bathroom was close. The campsite was right across the street from the water. My kids had a great time riding bikes all over the campground and playing in the water. We will definitely camp here again

Loop D is next to a large stream that fills the space with the sound of running water. There are many modern facilities and the spaces are large

We love Smokemont. Check-in was smooth, the sites were well kept and easy to get in and out of. We had the obligatory rain that we usually get but it was a nice stay.

It was fantastic! Everything was easy to find, the campsites were clean, the rangers and park staff were friendly. The campsites at the back are quieter and the river is not even a minute walk away.

This was our first time camping at Smokemont, and we really liked it. Our site backed up to the lovely river, so the sounds of the rippling water soothed us the whole time. We got to see lots of elk and turkeys as we drove to and from Cherokee, NC. We found Paul's restaurant there is dog-friendly, and Peter's has a great breakfast. Our only negative was the biting midges who came in through our screens at night. We will be back, but need to manage that problem better.
