About Cougar Rock Campground

Cougar Rock Campground, on the southwest side of Mt. Rainier National Park, is conveniently located near Paradise. Individual campsites are reservable on this page. Group campsite reservations can be made via Cougar Rock Group Campground.  Paradise is the most popular destination in the park, with a lodge and visitor center, many miles of hiking trails and a commanding view of the mountain-the highest in the state and Cascade range. The main attraction at Mount Rainier National Park is the mountain itself, a massive glacier-clad volcano, peaking at 14,411 ft. and dominating the skyline for hundreds of miles. Visitors travel through majestic old-growth forests, past tumbling waterfalls and historic buildings to reach sub-alpine meadows, where world-famous wildflower displays bloom through July and August. Popular activities in the park include sight-seeing, hiking, rock climbing and camping. Cougar Rock campground is located at an elevation of 3,180 feet. Summers are dry and cool with daytime temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees. Weather throughout the park can be variable, so visitors should come prepared.

Ranger recommended Perfect campsite (R19) with fairy bridge. Spent a week in great weather for climbing and hiking. Only disappointed was ban on campfires….maybe next time.

I liked the campground and this campsite. Sites are well spaced so it doesn’t feel crowded. This site is across from the bathroom, but not too close. The bathroom lights did stay on all night, so if you’re sensitive to light when sleeping, this may not be the spot for you. If the bathroom door is left open overnight, the sinks will be CRAWLING with bugs in the AM. Note: no soap in the bathrooms.

We had a nice, spacious site in Loop D. Restrooms were clean.
In Loop D, which is designated reservation only, all sites had a red “reserved “ sign on the site post, but at least half of them were never occupied. The sign at the campground entrance always said “full”, and we couldn’t help but wonder what kind of a system is in place that allows this.
No campfires allowed all summer, and I find this to be misguided given this is a maintained, front country campground. While I understand and appreciate the need to lessen the possibility of wildfires, not being able to have a campfire in such campgrounds really takes away from the camping experience. I would be curious to know statistics about the percentage of wildfires originating from such campgrounds???
Not once during our stay of three nights did we ever see a park service employee go through the campground. Sadly, perhaps that was one of the negative impacts of the cuts to the park service.
Quite interestingly however, we were shocked to see a STREET SWEEPER go through the campground multiple times! That was a first, and we were puzzled about that.

Fairly spacious site with the tent pad down a bit lower than the picnic area. A short walk to the bathrooms and trash is across the way. There’s a short trail from the campground that will take you to an (easy) trail to Longmire. A great route to get a nice hike in with a pit stop for coffee or a meal at Longmire.

This site has a tent pad a few stone steps down into a small ditch-like area. It was great because you don’t get a lot of the light pollution from the bathrooms or headlights. Note: no soap in the bathrooms, and if the bathroom door is kept open overnight, the sinks are CRAWLING with bugs in the morning. Overall, good experience with well-spaced sites.

Great campground! Quick drive or pleasant 1.5mi hike down to Longmire. Sites are nice and well kept. Bathrooms and garbage bin area were super clean. Some of the sites are a little small and packed in close to one another while others are large and more secluded.

Please pay attention to campsite maximum limits when selecting a site. If you exceed posted limits, you may be turned away upon arrival if a larger site is not available.

Maximum two tents per site provided both tents fit within the specified tent pad dimensions. Most campsites can only accommodate one tent.

Motor homes over 35 feet and trailers over 27 feet are not allowed to enter the campground. Turns on loop roads are tight and vehicle damage is likely to occur. There is no working dump station at Cougar Rock.

There are no electric, water or sewer hook-ups available at individual campsites. Potable water are located near the campground entrance.

Please call the campground office at (360) 569-6626 for same day cancellations or if you will be arriving a day late. If a camper does not check-in at the ranger station by 12:00pm check-out time the day after the scheduled arrival date, their reservation will be cancelled, the camper will incur a $10.00 service fee, and forfeit the first night's camping fee.
