Overall, excellent service, very spacious, very quiet and private. The ranger at check-in was also vey pleasant and helpful in providing recommendations for specific lots. I liked that there were communal food storage, restrooms, water foundations, and recycling/trash.

Gorgeous hikes and views all around. No phone service but that was a blessing to really get away from it all. Ended up extending for an 8 day stay.

Nice campground in a world-class national park:
We had a little trepidation about traveling to a very popular national park while the camping was first-come, first-serve only. But as it is at the end of the season, it was reasonable to expect some vacancies. And indeed, there were enough spots to choose from. Some sites were a little close to others, which made ours seem less personal. And because of a warm spell, the campground did in fact fill to capacity.
But the restrooms were clean, the grounds were well-maintained. The only issues were a huge tree that had fallen into one of the campsites, making it unusable. And our own site had experienced a washout on the exit portion of the pull-through. In order not to have to back out with a trailer, I had to do a little road building to fill in enough to get my car up and out.
But this is the third time I have camped at Mt. Rainier national park, and it will not be the last.

We stayed 3 nights. The 1st afternoon, a rented RV pulled into the site across from us. There were about 6 adults who clearly were drinking on the way to RNP. They played music for hours and continued to drink. Not enjoyable.
The 2nd afternoon, 2 male adults pulled into the same site. They too were drinking and continued to. We kept hearing the clanking of metal and discovered one of them was using a throwing ax and hitting/lodging it into a large douglas fir trunk with it. Repeatedly. For hours. The 3rd night most of the loop was empty - and quiet.

Cougar Rock is what I would call a traditional National Park campground. Clean restrooms with fresh water and waste water dumping, neat sites with gorgeous old growth forest, all situated close to popular park attractions. We stayed in the no generator loop which made for a peaceful experience.
I would come back in a heartbeat!!

Beautiful campground with unique sites and decent spacing. Didn’t have any issues with noise. Very close to Nisqually River and cool viewpoints there. All staff I spoke with were very kind and helpful. Make sure you buy firewood in Ashford before getting to the park, they charge $15/bundle (small bundles) at the national park store. Washroom facilities were clean but could certainly use some updating. I didn’t find anywhere in this area of the park that was suitable for bathing/rinsing off (showers, lakes, rivers, etc.). I went on a weekday in late September and had no issue getting a first come/first serve site when I showed up around 2:30 pm. All in all I very much enjoyed my stay and wish I could have stayed longer!
