I stayed three nights four days at the South Rim Campground. Overall, it was nice but as it was very hot in July, I wish the tent site would be more shaded. Remember there is no shower facility, so you have to come up with your way to clean yourself. I stayed four days because I drove through the scenic drive, took the Gunnison Route to the bottom of the canyon and drove to the North Rim. Also, I visited National Monument from here (one and a half hour drive).

This National park was very clean and had excellent birding right at 0ur camping spot! The ranger talks (held each evening - as well as on the trail during the (HOT) days) - were truly informative and interesting. Great job!
The shorter walks to overview spots catered nicely to my husband’s limited ability to hike long distances.
We were also privileged to be camping in the middle of a game trail and got daily observances of a doe as she passed through, including once passing within 6’ of where we were sitting reading and another one passing by with her fawn! And the trip was capped off by an up close and personal viewing of a bear cub!
And, did I neglect to mention the amazing vistas and incredible geology of the area? Like our own little Grand Canyon…
Had a terrific visit!

Good size site. Pit Toilet facilities nearby. Remember no showers and good idea to bring water for washing dishes as water is only provided for drinking.

Although it was hot (mid-July), we were able to hike some and the views from the trails along with the views from the overlooks (all on the South Rim) were breath-taking. At the suggestion of our camp host, we drove the East Portal road (not for the timid but we have regular practice in the canyons of New Mexico) and the view "from the bottom up" was a great addition to our "top down" hikes and drive along the South Rim. The Black Canyon trip was so worth taking. I highly recommend!

Sites were clean, felt very private with all the trees. Bathrooms were clean and always well stocked with toilet paper. It was nice and quiet and night. We loved that we were so close to all the lookouts on Rim Road and that we could visit in the evenings easily when it wasn’t busy.

The campground host was wonderful! We have a large tend that didn’t fit the site we had reserved (loop A) - but he helped us find the perfect site on loop C. The trees provided the perfect canopy for shade in the hot July sun.
As for the park itself - two nights and a day and a half we’re perfect for seeing the canyon. Be sure to catch sunrise and sunset as the light that reflects off the different rock formations changes dramatically.
