Kipahulu Campground

Fantastic campsite near the coast. Had a great experience, and you can't beat the price @ $8. Only negative is that I had some mongoose that kept rustling around my tent at night, but that can't be helped. Would stay here again!

Very nice place 😊 Just note that there is no water at the campground itself but at the visitor center, a couple minutes drive away.

Such a beautiful and remote campground. The road to Hana is a real nail biter in a campervan! The nearby hike is gorgeous and won’t be crowded if you start early morning. Potable water is available nearby but tastes like rusty pipes, would recommend bringing your own. FYI as of 3/13/24 the south road on Hana Highway just past Kipahulu is closed due to construction. This did not show up on google maps so if you’re planning on driving all the way through might want to check that out.

Everything was spectacular. The campsite was isolated enough, at 150 feet from the next site over (I was site #1). Friendly people, some shared fruit as they were leaving! Awesome staff -- Thanks T! Awesome views of the cold lava rock and the ocean. Delightfully quiet in the morning. I can't recommend it enough!

Great location, lots of room between Camper Van spots. Really convenient for the hikes nearby!

We had the best time! Beautiful, perfect location. We had site 18 which was magical. The only thing to note is that there is no water at the campsite itself -- it is at the Visitors center.

Beautiful spot. Some sites were drive in, some were hike in. The hike in sites were absolutely stunning but a bit of a walk to the 2 further ones. No running water at the campground. Nice area to walk around. Clean and well kept.

Beautiful walk-in site #16 featured an amazing view of waves crashing on the rocks. Hiked the Pipiwai trail the next morning before the crowds came. Loved Aunty Sandy's banana bread and Coconut Glens vegan coconut ice cream. Ate at Joel's food truck for a fantastic meal!

The location is exceptional, if you're willing to carry your belongings from your car to the tent site. Tent site is directly at the coastline so you can position your tent to have the sun shine into it right after it rises from the ocean. If you have trouble sleeping with ocean waves crashing into the Basalt coastline just feet away from your tent site, sites 16 - 20 might not be for you.
Really helpful and friendly personnel (native women from the island). One morning, my husband's car had died and the ranger had a pair of jumper cables he could borrow and a local visitor helped him jump start the vehicle.
The visitor center has a nice variety of locally sourced snacks (chocolate covered coffee beans, macadamia nuts. beef jerky, etc.) and postcards for purchase besides the usual visitor center offerings. We also liked their emphasis on educating the public about the complex history of the park, its prior use and the development of the local flora and fauna and how things changed over time during the Polynesian arrivals, the British and other later invasive species being introduced.
We also appreciate their effort to establish more native trees and other plants on the campground and in the park.
