Kipahulu Campground

Great campground. Quiet with great views.

This was one of our favourite camp spots on the island. For our family of a toddler & pre teen, the space completely met everyone’s needs & more. We are so grateful for all the amazing memories made at this site.

The park gate attendant (I didn't catch her name) is the sweetest lady. She truly enjoyed her job and provided much-needed information about the campground, visitor center hours, and hiking trails. We got campsite #12 with 4 portapotties nearby, the visitor center has restroom access all day (note no shower). Bring bug spray if you going to hike Waimoku Falls.

We had an excellent time at this campsite. The views were gorgeous and there were nice hiking trails.

Such an affordable and peaceful way to experience this unique area. The road out to the Kipahulu district on the road past Hana is primarily one lane along the cliffside without guard rails. It's a beautiful drive, but worth considering in trip planning to pick the safest time of day. Would recommend higher clearance when driving to the campground itself as the road was a little bit rought. Parking is in the grass off the road primarily within the campground. Be sure to read the instructions board on the way in if you arrive after hours. The flush bathrooms/sinks at the visitor's center are right next door to the campground and were open 24/7 during our stay. If you're already coming this far past Hana, this campground is a great place to stay.

Gorgeous campground!

The camping at campsite 18 was nothing short of magical. Due to a washout, we had to take the Hana Hwy to get there (it was a BIT windy and long...) and ended up arriving well after dark. The weather was pleasant, though, and with our headlamps, we walked our gear from the car about 4 minutes through a well trimmed path of grass to our campsite. The site has a sandy patch to pitch a tent and a picnic table that is sheltered by a tree. You can clearly hear the waves crashing against the cliffs, but it wasn't until the next morning that we could see the beauty that our campsite was on. The hiking trails nearby are excellent, and the camp toilet is sufficient. Running water and water bottle refills and flushing toilets are in the parking lot at the trailheads, maybe 4 minutes drive from the campground. Very easy and very beautiful.

PARADISE!!!! It’s insane that you can stay the night on Maui for this price. Local Kipahulu were awesome and welcoming. The first night I had a spot near the restrooms and the second night I got one of the 2 “walk up” sights on the cliff!! I just hung my hammock gently in the palm tree grove and didn't even need a tent. Would HIGHLY recommend. Also the gate attendant was very accommodating since I got in late and had Haleakala sunrise the next morning.
I never filled out the after hours check-in slip before I left (4AM) but luckily made it back just before 11AM, and avoided the cancellation fee. Lady was so nice, and was amazed I did all that driving.
Luckily that 2nd day I got to really explore the area and do the 2 hikes on my list.

Pack a hammock with a bug net zipper and get one of the two walk up sites… minimalist paradise

This campground was probably the one we loved most on Maui. We didn‘t want to rush on the road to Hana and also didn‘t want to stuff all must sees in one day. That‘s why we decided to stay one night at this campground which is an around 30min drive past Hana. We took our time driving the road to Hana and enjoyed an amazing ocean and mountain view at the end of the day. The next day we drove back on the road to Hana and stopped at the sights we couldn’t do the other day. We enjoyed it even more because we didn‘t rush.

There is no running water at the campground but if you only stay one night like us it‘s easily doable to just buy some gallons of water before you hit the road. We had some cell service and there are pit toilets available. Sunrise there was beautiful and even the sunset made the whole environment glow which was stunning! The campsite is close to some hiking trails (the famous Pipiwai trail is so close and you don‘t have to stress to drive the whole road to hana to get to the trailhead early but you can just wake up, pack your stuff and get going…). There is not really any access to the ocean because it‘s mostly cliffs but that made the whole scenery just more stunning.
It was windy when we visited and although it was warm we definitely recommend bringing long pants and a sweater. And definitely be prepared for sudden heavy rain showers! It could be sunny without any clouds and a minute after that it could start pouring!

All in all we loved it and definitely recommend staying there
