What Guests Are Saying
Gallo Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained camping experience in Chaco Canyon, with stunning views, amazing night skies, and friendly campground hosts who provide valuable information and assistance. The campground is clean and organized, featuring level sites and access to hiking trails and ancient ruins. However, visitors should be aware of the rough access roads, limited privacy between campsites, and occasional issues with water and restroom facilities.

While the campground is very scenic, there is a serious issue with status updates on the recreation.gov website. There is no mention of the water being turned off at the campsite. I arrived to find no bathrooms or drinking water. The sign on the bathroom door had been hanging there for weeks and after talking to the Chaco Canyon park rangers, this is a normal occurrence in the winter months there. I brought 14 gallons of water (this is a remote desert area after all), but there was literally no place to go to the bathroom. If I had been warned in advance, I could have brought a privacy shelter and a shovel to bury human waste. But imagine the amount of human waste buried in the campsite if this is an annual occurrence. It's fine for RV people with their own toilets and large water tanks, but a serious issues for tent campers. Recreation.gov needs to update this campsite listing to provide explicit, detailed information about this situation including dates. I ended up not staying in the campground overnight. Of course there was no way to get a refund, and no cell service out there. The rangers at Chaco Canyon can't do anything about it either, they are not affliated with recreation.gov or the campground.

the campground was clean and somewhat spacious. Bathrooms are heated and the is water there. There are some petroglyphs by the fire ring. :-). The roads can be a problem. I came in from the north and only had 5 miles of bad washboard road. I drove 5 mph..... it was bad enough that I was clear that I was not going to run to the store for anything! I went during the winter solstice. Temps dropped to 9 at night but were a balmy 40ish even 50 degrees during the day which made for nice hiking. A special/sacred place.

Bathroom with running water. No showers. Filled up with other campers. Quiet. Beautiful stars all around. Except in winter, when your breath fogs up the windows which becomes ice.

I love this spot so much. Of course you are there to use it as a base for exploring Chaco, so I won't bore you with specifics - do it all!
The campground is clean and quiet. The bathrooms are immaculate. The facility feels very well maintained. I love it!

We arrived in the off-season and had our choice of sites. Each site has a fire pit and raised dirt pad area for your tent. We brought our own water and firewood. The bathrooms were simple, with one sink and a few stalls, and immaculate. It was fun to camp so close to a few small ruins, and observe a few canyon swallow nests up on the rock face. The road in was not as bad as others have stated in the past, but there were a few deep water bars to navigate, so drive slowly and keep an eye out.

Beautiful area. Easy access to park and visitor center. Secluded enough, but accessible. Nice warm bathroom in evening with running water and flush toilet. Fajada Butte is grandeur site seen from campground.
