Reserved 48A and 48B double site. Bathrooms were generally kept clean. However, our sites were not ideal. We are tent campers, not RV people. There was no room for a tent in 48A, it would have been too close to the fire pit. We would have expected more "living space" from a double site. One side of the picnic table was only a few inches away from the fire pit. On the last morning before dawn, our large cooler full of food was stolen. If you are hungry, please don't steal food from others. Get help from your local community. We likely won't return to this campground.

There's a sand trail along the Siltcoos River (a small and calm river that we saw people kayaking in) to the beach, about a mile away. We walked to the beach in the evening to catch the sunset. The next day we rented ATVs at Torex, 8 minutes north. We loved riding the trails and up and down the beach, but the dunes were very difficult to handle and navigate. We visited Florence in the evening, which was a short drive away. This park might not allow loud ATVs, I heard only distant ATV noise while we were there.

We stayed at this campground for 3 nights over 4th of July at campsite 38. The site was so small that we could not safely enjoy a campfire due to it's proximity to our tent; so we went without having a fire during our entire stay. The campsites are very crowed and on top of one another. You feel as though you are sharing a site with your neighbors. This campground was extremely loud. Quiet hours were not being enforced by any camp host or staff so it was an unpleasant night's sleep. Also, while walking around I notice several campfires that were left unattended. Many sites had fires burning after guests went to bed and I even noticed fires burning in sites that were unoccupied completely (guests had already checked out). This was extremely alarming as this is a safety hazard. The positive to this campground: the bathrooms were well kept. Overall -- it is unlikely I would stay here again.

This is one of my favorite campgrounds in Oregon. We go for a week every year. There are so many positives about this campground: the proximity to Florence and the rest of the central coast, the trails, the river, the wildlife, the beautiful beach full of gulls, shorebirds, agates and more.

The site we stayed in was excellent, clean, shady, and close to the estuary. We enjoyed walking along the water, even down to but not on the beach, and given the odious heat wave we came from, the cool temperatures were a relief. Less enjoyable were the dune buggies (though we've been in much noisier places) and the fireworks. We would recommend this campground to others and would return ourselves.

Great location, most sites have a lot of privacy even though they're pretty close together. Not many mosquitos in late June when we went. ATV noise from dunes is ever present during the day, but fairly distant and didn't really bother me. Kayaking is excellent, although the launching point from campground (behind sites 4 and 5 or under the bridge) was fairly muddy. Bathrooms clean and well stocked. No glass recycling on site, but aluminum recycling was available. Snowy Plover nesting closes off large swaths of the beach during part of the year.

Waxmyrtle Campground is a nice facility in a great location in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The staff made a great effort to keep the facilities clean and well-maintained. The sites are spacious, and ours felt quite private. The Siltcoos River was close by. The Waxmyrtle Trail led a mile through the dunes to a lovely section of beach that was uncrowded because not that many people want to hike a mile through the dunes. There is another dunes train called Chief Tsiltcoos right across the access road, and a third trail follows an old oxbow of the river, now a wildlife haven slowly becoming a meadow. Our party enjoyed kayaks and paddleboards on the river, from the lake to the ocean surf.
The only downside was that, if there are shower facilities, they were closed while we were there. Well, and this is next to an OHV recreation area, so if you are hoping for quiet wilderness sounds, you'll be hearing dune buggies and ATVs instead.
For us, it was a blessing. While it was 115 degrees in Portland, it never got warmer than 82 along the Siltcoos, and was mostly in the 60s-70s.

Wonderful campground, nice large private sites, quiet campers. A super location near but not on the beach. About a 3/4 mile walk to a very quiet beach, or you can drive a short distance to the parking lot and walk over the dunes.

There is a 14-day in 30 rolling days camping limit on the Siuslaw National Forest. The 14 days does not have to be consecutive. The 14-day limit covers the entire Siuslaw National Forest and not just this campground as shown in the Rules Section. This means you cannot go to other campgrounds on the Siuslaw National Forest after reaching the 14-day limit. |
