What Guests Are Saying
Smokemont Campground offers a clean and tranquil setting with ample space, a nearby stream, and access to numerous hiking trails. Many visitors appreciate the wildlife, including elk sightings, and the helpful staff. While some amenities like showers are lacking, the overall experience is positive, with a focus on nature and a peaceful atmosphere. However, campsite proximity and occasional noise from fellow campers can be drawbacks.

Disappointed when told making reservation use a breathing machine and find out no electricity but a handicap sign

See our comments on Elkmont Campground. Actually we liked Smokemont a little better than Elkmont only because sites there seamed a little farther apart. And we needed to move to the other side of the mountain, and we interacted with several staff at Smokemont to cancel reservations and make new ones because the road over the mountain was closed. Staff was great.
The sites at both campgrounds were great.

I have camped at this campground since I was 8 years old. I am now 70 years old. Over the years it has changed, but always for the good. I have wonderful memories of camping with my parents, my sister and my two brothers. After marriage I introduced my husband to the joys of camping which led him to becoming a Scout leader with our two boys. My mother was always up for a good hike, so I have hiked many trails in the GSM. One of our daily hike was the short nature trail here at Smokemount. One memorable time was when my brother ran ahead of the group with my Mother’s shouted warning of “You’ll run into a bear”. No sooner than said, he came running back towards us from around a curve in the trail. Eye wide with excitement. ‘I just saw a bear”.

Campsite was clean, quiet, nice location with trees and a little hilly (not flat). Sites were level. Showers, laundry. Lovely covered picnic area with fire pit and chimney.

Wonderful and well-kept campground with some sites close enough to the creek to hear throughout the night.
Very open, so not much privacy.

The staff was very courteous and helpful, however the restrooms need more attention, I know money Drives these things but lighting and ventilation improvements would help.

The rangers and volunteers were very knowledgeable and helpful. I would like to see more undergrowth be allowed to grow between campsites.

It’s a haven. A national treasure. And the bison! Great job bringing them back! Also appreciate all the work that went into keeping things going as we went into USG shutdown mode.
